Some wedding days feel like a wedding. Jack and Jess’s felt like a weekend-long celebration with their favorite people on Smith Lake.
Their closest friends and family flew in from Virginia and Long Island for a destination wedding at The Barn at Smith Lake, and because they had the entire venue for the weekend, the celebration started long before anyone walked down the aisle.
There were boats. Jet skis. Backflips. Green suits. A reverse first look. Champagne. Cigars. Tequila. An incredible sunset. And, somehow, fireworks to finish it all off.
But what made this Barn at Smith Lake wedding so memorable wasn’t just everything that happened. It was how obvious it was that every person there genuinely wanted to be there for Jack and Jess.
From the moment we arrived, it felt like one giant weekend with the people they love most. And as Alabama wedding photographers, those are the kinds of weddings we love getting to document.
A Wedding Weekend on Smith Lake
While Jess was getting ready in the Glass House, we headed down to Smith Lake to find Jack, his family, and his best friends already making the most of the weekend.
There was a boat. There was a jet ski. There were drinks. There were backflips off the boat.
Basically, the perfect way to start a wedding day at The Barn at Smith Lake.
It was hot, but nobody seemed to care. Jack and his friends spent the morning out on the lake laughing, hanging out, and soaking in the fact that they were all together to celebrate one of their favorite people.
And honestly, this was the vibe for the entire weekend.
Because Jack and Jess had the venue for the whole weekend, their wedding felt less like a single day and more like a destination getaway with their closest friends and family. Everyone was together, everyone was having fun, and there was nowhere else anyone needed to be.
Green Suits & the Groom Squad
Back at the venue, Jack and his groomsmen got ready in some seriously good-looking dark green suits.
The wedding colors were a mix of oranges, yellows, pinks, and dark green, and the entire palette fit the setting around Smith Lake so well.
We photographed Jack getting ready before heading outside for portraits with his groomsmen. Even with the Alabama heat, the guys were having an absolute blast.
There was no shortage of laughing, joking, and celebrating Jack.
These weren’t just groomsmen standing around for a picture. They were Jack’s people.
And you could tell how much they loved being there for him.
Jess Gets Ready in the Glass House
While Jack and the guys were hanging out, Jess finished getting ready in the Glass House surrounded by her closest friends, sister, and mother.
The Glass House at The Barn at Smith Lake is such a beautiful space for getting ready, especially with all the natural light pouring in. It gave us plenty of opportunities for both beautiful bridal portraits and candid moments with the women who have been part of Jess’s life for years.
There was a lot of excitement, a lot of anticipation, and plenty of time spent soaking in the morning before the wedding officially began.
And then came one of our favorite moments of the entire day.
A Reverse First Look
Instead of Jack turning around to see Jess, we flipped the script.
We set Jess up outside the Glass House and had Jack walk up to her. When he reached her, Jess turned around to see Jack.

Jack got emotional, and the two of them shared a quiet moment together before reading their vows to each other.
And because it was also Jack’s birthday, Jess started her vows with:
“First off, Happy birthday, Jack!”
It was funny, personal, and completely them.
Those are the moments we love most. The ones that aren’t necessarily planned to be a “perfect wedding moment,” but end up being some of the most memorable parts of the day.
Wedding Portraits at The Barn at Smith Lake
After their first look and private vows, we spent time photographing Jack and Jess together, along with their bridal party and families.
The combination of The Barn at Smith Lake, the Glass House, the lake, and the surrounding property gives couples so many options for wedding portraits.
We were able to move through several different settings throughout the day while still keeping everything connected to the venue.
Jack and Jess were also just so much fun to photograph. There was no shortage of laughing, joking, and soaking in the fact that they were finally married.
And then it was time for the ceremony.

Jack and Jess exchanged vows outside The Barn with Smith Lake stretching out behind them.
It was one of those quintessential Alabama wedding scenes: beautiful summer sunshine, the lake in the background, and all of their closest friends and family gathered together to watch them get married.
We even managed to capture one of our favorite drone photographs of the day: Jess walking down the aisle while a boat happened to pass by on Smith Lake in the background.
You really couldn’t plan a better moment.
Champagne, Cigars & Happy Hour
Immediately after the ceremony, Jack and Jess gathered the entire bridal party together for champagne.
And when we say they popped champagne, we mean they popped champagne.
The celebration continued into happy hour with friends and family, cigars, drinks, and plenty of laughs. Jess even joined the guys for a cigar, which felt very on-brand for the entire day.
One of our favorite photographs from this part of the day was actually a much quieter moment.
While everyone else was celebrating, Jess’s dad sat alone in the ceremony space smoking a cigarette and taking everything in.
His daughter had just gotten married.
It was a simple moment, but it said so much.
That’s one of the reasons we love being Smith Lake wedding photographers. There are the big, exciting moments, but there are also the tiny moments happening in between them that tell the real story of a wedding day.
Sunset Portraits at the Glass House
Then came the golden hour.
And wow.
Jack and Jess stepped away from the party for sunset portraits around the Glass House, and the light was absolutely unreal.
The warm Alabama sunset paired with the colorful wedding palette and the landscape around Smith Lake created some of our favorite portraits from the entire wedding.
These were the kind of portraits that make you want to pull the couple away for “just five more minutes.”
And thankfully, Jack and Jess were up for it.
A Reception Full of Love, Tequila & Dancing
By the time the reception began, it was very clear just how loved Jack and Jess are.
Their reception included emotional speeches from Jess’s sister, Jack’s best man, and Jess’s dad. Every speech brought something different, but they all had the same underlying theme: these two people are deeply loved by the people surrounding them.
You could feel it in the room.
Every person there had made the trip to Alabama to celebrate Jack and Jess, and it was obvious that nobody wanted to miss it.
And then Jess’s dad brought out tequila bottles.
The emotional speeches quickly turned into a party.
Everyone danced, laughed, drank, and celebrated late into the night. It felt less like a traditional reception and more like one giant party with the people who matter most to Jack and Jess.
And then, somehow, they topped it all off with a firework show.
A Barn at Smith Lake Wedding We’ll Never Forget
Jack and Jess’s wedding was one of those days that sticks with you.
From friends doing backflips off boats on Smith Lake, to a reverse first look, colorful wedding details, champagne with the bridal party, cigars, emotional speeches, sunset portraits, tequila, dancing, and fireworks, the entire day felt like a reflection of who Jack and Jess are and the people they love most.
As Birmingham and Alabama wedding photographers, we’re lucky to get to travel throughout the state photographing couples in incredible places like The Barn at Smith Lake.
But more than anything, we love weddings where you can feel how much everyone cares about the couple.
Jack and Jess’s wedding was exactly that.
A destination wedding in Alabama.
A weekend on the lake with their favorite people.
A whole lot of fun.
And a wedding day we can’t stop thinking about.
